BPC-157 in Europe

Short answer: BPC-157 is not an approved medicine in the EU, the UK or the US. It may not be sold as a medicine; in Europe it is traded as reference material for laboratory research. Athletes should know that it is on the WADA Prohibited List (category S0).

What BPC-157 is

BPC-157 ("body protection compound") is a synthetic peptide of 15 amino acids. Its sequence is derived from a protein found in human gastric juice. It was developed and studied mainly by a research group in Zagreb, Croatia, from the early 1990s onwards. Most publications on BPC-157 come from that group.

What the research shows

Almost all data come from cell and animal studies. They describe effects on the healing of tendons, ligaments, muscle, bone and the gastrointestinal tract, on the formation of new blood vessels and on nitric oxide signalling. Human data are very limited: a few small pilot studies and case series, but no large controlled clinical trial. Whether the animal results apply to humans is therefore open. Overview (German): BPC-157 Wirkung und Studien.

Question Answer
Approved medicine in the EU? no
Permitted as a food supplement? no; it is not an authorised novel food
On the WADA list? yes, category S0 (non-approved substances)
Sold as research material? yes, as laboratory reference material

Under EU medicines law, BPC-157 offered with dosing instructions or health claims would be an unauthorised medicine. Rules on private import and possession are national and differ; see Are peptides legal in Europe?

The FDA decision of 2023

In the US, the FDA placed BPC-157 in category 2 of its list of bulk substances for compounding in 2023, citing safety concerns and missing data, including possible immunogenicity and peptide impurities. Compounding pharmacies there may no longer use it. This does not change the legal position in Europe, but it is often cited and shows how thin the safety data are.

Oral BPC-157 and capsules

BPC-157 is unusually stable in gastric juice, which is why oral forms are studied in animals alongside injections. Peptika offers BPC-157 capsules as well as lyophilised powder; both are research material, not food supplements.

Quality: what to check

Because there is no approved product, the quality of BPC-157 depends entirely on the supplier. Check for an HPLC purity of at least 98–99 %, an LC-MS identity test (molecular mass about 1,419 Da) and a batch number that matches your vial. How to read the report: How to read a peptide COA. Peptika ships BPC-157 from Germany with a lab report for every batch.

Frequently asked questions

Is BPC-157 banned in sport?

Yes. WADA lists BPC-157 in category S0 (non-approved substances), banned in and out of competition.

Has BPC-157 been tested in humans?

Only in a few small pilot studies and case series. There are no large controlled clinical trials; most data come from animal studies.

Why did the FDA restrict BPC-157?

In 2023 the FDA placed it in category 2 of its compounding list, citing possible risks such as immunogenicity and impurities and a lack of safety data.

What is the molecular weight of BPC-157?

About 1,419 Da (C62H98N16O22). An LC-MS test should show this mass.
